ML ENTREPRENEURSHIP

ML Entrepreneurship (Team Performance Event 2-3 members)

This event allows members to act as young entrepreneurs as they are given a challenge that a small business owner could face and then asked to provide their own solutions.  FBLA supports the entrepreneurial spirit and this event reflects that belief and passion.

Eligibility

Each Middle Level chapter may enter members who are on record in the FBLA-PBL Online Membership System as having paid dues by the officially published deadline for the current school year.

Regional Conference Procedure

Members will receive a case study prior to the Regional and they will have the opportunity to prepare a

2-3 minute presentation that highlights their recommendations to the questions posed in the case study.  Judges will have the opportunity to ask questions to seek clarification on the proposals.  The case study will be entrepreneurial by nature and will focus on a small business issue.

Topic:

You and your friends just recently have started a business called “The phone doctor”, which is a company that fixes broken cell phone and iPad screens as well as any other cell phone breakage problems to the actual phone itself.  Your task is now to come up with an advertising plan showing how you are going to advertise your newly created company.   You will also need to create some sample advertisements to do along with the plan so people will know what your business is and what you have to offer.

State Conference Procedure

Members will receive a case study prior to the State Conference and they will have the opportunity to prepare a

2-3 minute presentation that highlights their recommendations to the questions posed in the case study.  Judges will have the opportunity to ask questions to seek clarification on the proposals.  The case study will be entrepreneurial by nature and will focus on a small business issue.

Chapters may enter up to four teams at the State Leadership Conference.  The top three (3) winners are recognized at the State Leadership Conference.  Winners do not move on to the National Leadership Conference in Middle Level Events.

Topic:

You and your partner have an independent bakery that sells cupcakes and event cakes and specializes in catering to children’s parties. Your bakery is in a town with a population of 40,000 that grows during summer months due to tourism. Your bakery has been in business for 5 years and its hours of operation have always been 9:00am to 5:00pm. Since opening 5 years ago, sales remain stable and consistent with the price of a cupcake being $1.99.

Recently a new bakery, the Sweet Spot, has opened. Making your bakery to losing business to the competition. The Sweet Spot not only sells cakes and cupcakes but cookies and pies as well. With a cupcake being priced at $1.95, the two bakeries’ prices are comparable. The market is still choosing to purchase at the Sweet Spot however, decreasing your bakery profits by 30%.

You and your partner have some marketing expertise to turn your business around to better compete with the newly opened Sweet Spot. You must be prepared to discuss the following questions.

•How should Cupcake Central modify its business to attract more customers?

•What is the best means of advertising for Cupcake Central?

•What type of marketing campaign should be implemented to increase the number of loyal customers to Cupcake Central?
